Bill was born and brought up in Rankinston, a mining village some 12 miles from Ayr. After a career in the Fire Service spanning 31 years, Bill retired in 2015 and in 2017 became involved in local politics, where he served two terms as a local councillor, from 2007 until 2017.

Bill remains a “weel Kent face” around the town and confines himself to Cruising, Rotary, Ayr Guildry and also organises a weekly litter pick helping to make Ayr that wee bit tidier.

SubjectForgotten History
Date 18th June 2026 at 2pm
SpeakerIan McAnulla
VenueCastlehill Hill Church, Ayr, North Hall

Forgotten history refers to aspects of the past that have been overlooked, downplayed, deliberately sidelined, or simply faded from mainstream education and public memory - even though they were significant at the time or had lasting impact.

For example, do you know how Gunther Schabowski changed history?

Why was the Green Book a best seller and how did the Code Talkers help us win WW2?

Ian is a member of Ayr u3a. After he retired as a Chemistry teacher, he became interested in history., particularly in how political cartoons can be a help in understanding the past. As he looked into the past, he became struck by the number of people and events that had been ‘forgotten’. He has given a variety of related talks to organisations such as the Rotary.
